Trauma Therapy for Children and Teens

After a frightening or overwhelming experience, children may struggle with fear, distressing reminders, irritability, sleep difficulties, or changes in behavior. Some may have difficulty putting their experiences into words or understanding their feelings. At Therapy SoCal, we take time to understand each child’s experience, developmental needs, and family context.

Our trauma-informed child and teen therapy is tailored to the child’s age, symptoms, relationships, and individual needs. Treatment may include coping skills, caregiver guidance, preparation for trauma-focused work, and evidence-based interventions when appropriate. We focus on both emotional healing and everyday functioning, developing treatment goals that help children feel safer, strengthen relationships, and reengage in the activities and experiences that matter to them.

Understanding Child Trauma Treatment

Trauma-related concerns can affect a child’s emotions, behavior, relationships, and responses to reminders of difficult experiences. Because these changes can have many causes, careful assessment is essential. At Therapy SoCal, we consider each child’s history, symptoms, developmental needs, and family context to understand what may be contributing to their distress and guide treatment without making assumptions based on a single behavior or experience.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps suitable clients process distressing experiences and reduce trauma-related symptoms. EMDR integrates body-based (somatic) awareness and bilateral stimulation with the processing of distressing memories, incorporating elements of exposure without requiring extensive verbal retelling of the experience. This can be particularly helpful for children who struggle to put their experiences into words. Your clinician will assess your child’s needs and readiness, explain the process, and determine whether EMDR is an appropriate fit within a developmentally sensitive, trauma-informed treatment plan.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based, structured treatment that helps children and caregivers understand and address the effects of trauma. Treatment builds the child’s and parent’s understanding of trauma responses, develops practical coping and emotional regulation skills, and incorporates developmentally appropriate trauma processing, including gradual imaginal exposure, to reduce distress associated with traumatic memories. Caregiver involvement helps reinforce skills, strengthen support, and promote recovery beyond the therapy session. Your clinician will assess whether TF-CBT is appropriate for your child’s needs and explain how caregivers participate in treatment.

Early or repeated adverse experiences can shape how children understand themselves, regulate emotions, and develop relationships with others. Developmental trauma therapy considers the impact of these experiences alongside the child’s current environment, developmental needs, and caregiver relationships. Treatment focuses on building safety, strengthening emotional regulation, and supporting healthier relational patterns. Families navigating placement changes, adoption, or foster care can also explore adoption and foster care support for care that addresses the unique experiences and transitions involved.

Caregivers can help a child apply useful skills outside sessions. We discuss responses to distress, predictable routines and ways to strengthen connection. If a family is also navigating separation or ongoing conflict, divorce and family support may help address related needs within an appropriate plan.

The first sessions focus on understanding concerns and building a working relationship. Your clinician will discuss pacing and ways your child can communicate. Treatment can be adapted to development and readiness; you can raise concerns about discussing difficult experiences before work begins.

No single approach is appropriate for everyone. A clinician considers the child’s symptoms, development, readiness and broader needs before recommending EMDR. The approach, preparation and caregiver role are explained as part of the treatment plan.

TF-CBT is a structured approach designed to address trauma-related symptoms in children and adolescents, with caregiver involvement. General therapy can address a wider range of concerns. Your clinician will explain whether a trauma-focused approach fits the assessment findings and goals.

Yes, when appropriate. Caregiver sessions may help adults understand trauma responses and support coping and connection at home. Your clinician discusses how participation will work while considering the child’s needs, trust and confidentiality.

The duration varies with the child’s needs, treatment approach, readiness and progress. Your clinician will discuss the expected plan and review it over time. The practice does not promise a fixed number of sessions or the same outcome for every child.

In-person treatment can be discussed for our Valencia and Glendora offices. Ask the team about EMDR appointments and a clinician whose training fits your child’s needs. EMDR-specific openings must be confirmed rather than assumed from general therapy availability.
